What's used to make a dog tag?

Dog tags are usually made of stainless steel, aluminum, plastic or brass. The stainless steel dog tags can be found in a shiny or matte finish.

The content of stainless steel is an alloy which contains iron and has a minimum of 10.5% chromium. Stainless steel does not stain or rust as easily as regular steel. (Thus the name "stainless" steel. There is also a high resistance to oxidation and corrosion.

Aluminum (Al) is a silvery chemical element contained in the poor metal group. Aluminum is very resistant to oxidation and is strong, but light in weight. Aluminum is very versatile in that it is used in millions of different products throughout the world and is very important to the economy. It is used in all kinds of products in various industries such as the aerospace and transportation industry. It is very versatile due to its strength, light weight and flexibility.

The term plastic encompasses products of various synthetic and semi-synthetic polymerization materials. Its composition is organic condensation with the addition of polymers. Other materials may be added as well in order to improve the composition or economics of the plastic.

Few natural chemical compounds are considered plastics. Plastics are very flexible and can be formed into various objects including films and fibers. Plastics are tolerant to various elements such as heat. Plastics can be hard or soft and very resilient. These features enable plastics to be used in multiple industrial situations.

Brass is a combination of copper and zinc and is considered a copper alloy. In fact, it is normally over 50% copper. Various types of brass are called bronzes. Brass is hard, yet workable and is, therefore, considered a versatile material for manufacturing purposes.
